Ok peeps, here is the final lowdown on how the categories work from this season on. We have taken all your suggestions into consideration and have tweaked things considerably.
As such, this is pretty final for this year but we’re always happy to hear your thoughts on the subject so, if you have any, please do write to us at admin@bangalorebicyclechampionships.com.
As of now we’ve restricted the number of categories to 2 and are defined only for the men. We’d truly love to see the day when we have enough numbers to do this for the ladies so, those of you of the fairer sex who are reading this, do sign up
Riders are split into 2 Categories based on Skill / Speed
- Cat 1
- Cat 2
The riders have been placed into these categories based on the first race of the season – the time trial held on Sunday, 19th February, 2012. The top 40 percentile of the riders will ride in Cat 1 from the 2nd Race and the rest of the folks will race in Cat 2. Participants please click here to check which category you have been assigned to. If a rider missed the TT he or she will be placed in Cat 2 by default. There are a few exceptions to this for which you can refer to the FAQs.
On race day all Cat 1 riders are scheduled to start at 0730hrs followed by Cat 2 riders along with the women riders with a gap in between. From Race 2 onwards during registration riders will be given different coloured Bibs based on the Category to which they belong. We will have category-based racing for the entire season except for the Team Time Trial.
At the start line, Cat 1 riders will be grouped separately and will be ahead of the field followed by Cat 2 riders and the women riders. Riders in each category will be flagged off at the same time.
POINTS!
Individual
Again, we’ve reconsidered the points system and decided to retain the existing system with a couple of adaptations.
- At the end of the race we have the usual table with the timings and the winner bagging 30 points and the rest following based on the table below.
- We will only have one points table listed for both Cat 1 and Cat 2.
| Rider Position | Rider Points |
|---|---|
| 1 | 30 |
| 2 | 28 |
| 3 | 26 |
| 4 | 25 |

Team
- Riders registering on race day have to specify the team for which they are riding (we will eventually do away with this at the venue by including it in the online registration process).
- The points of the top 3 riders in a team for a race will add up to the points of the team.
- Team Time Trial: A minimum of x riders in a team have to cross the finish line – the xth rider’s timing is the team’s timing. Number of riders (x) will be announced soon.
- Team points will be awarded as listed below.
| Team Position | Team Points |
|---|---|
| 1 | 50 |
| 2 | 40 |
| 3 | 30 |
| 4 | 20 |
| 5 | 10 |
| 6 | 8 |

CATEGORY MOVEMENT
- There will not be any movement of riders from Cat 1 to Cat 2
- After the second race, Top 3 Cat 2 winners in each race have an option to move over to Cat 1. Any rider among Top 3 in Cat 2 who wishes to move over to Cat 1 has to mail us at admin@bangalorebicyclechampionships.com with his name and Bib number.
- A Cat 2 rider will be forced to move to Cat 1 if he has won 2 races
CATEGORY WINNERS
Top 3 Winners for Cat 1 and Cat 2 will be announced separately but the points assigned to the riders are based on timing.

It would help if we can have more information about the teams and how interested folks could contact the teams to join or get together to share ideas

Hi Ganesh. Thanks for the suggestion. Indeed we are working on a page for the teams. Keep watching this space for more. You could also show up at the next race and speak to people about it. Look forward to seeing you there.

It would be nice if we can come up with a condition that would force some cat 1 riders into cat 2. Conditions could be like, if he is below half mark in a given race. If a cat 1 rider is below half way mark, that means that 17% of the cat2 riders have beaten him. So, he deserves to be moved into cat 2. However, we can add exceptions like if a cat 1 rider was absent or DNF, he will be given one more chance to be in cat 1 in the next race. Two consecutive absence or DNF can push a cat 1 rider into cat 2. If we think, there can be more ideas. Somehow, we need to keep cat1 very competitive. Otherwise, under-performers like me will simply sit in cat 1 just because I got lucky in first race
